Buzz Coren crafts his jewelry pieces from a large block of dyed and natural hardwood, every color facet or layer reveals an individual piece of wood, about 275 layers thick. He personally dyes most of the veneers, a process that ensures no two pairs are ever exactly alike. They're coated with a durable semi-gloss finish and fitted with surgical steel ear wires and silver findings.

Buzz Coren began crafting functional and decorative objects in wood in 1980 when it got out of hand as a hobby. Besides his Featherwood jewelry. Buzz also creates multilayered bowls and vessels by commission. His home and basement wood shop are in the South Toe River Valley in Western North Carolina in view of the beautiful Black Mountain Range.

A few words from the artist:

Creating Featherwood jewelry begins with laminating a broad palette of natural and dyed veneer into stacks of 300 or so layers. With few exceptions, I dye all colors myself from raw poplar veneer that's slowly dried and pressed flat. The lamination is cut into blocks, then curves and smaller shapes. These are made into jewelry by precise cutting on band saws, shaping and refining on a high-speed drum sander and finally applying several coats of a durable finish. The technique I use ensures that no two pieces are ever identical; they're impossible to exactly reproduce. The multilayered earrings go through 50+ separate steps to make and I usually do them in batches, often having at least two styles in production at different stages to keep it interesting. I personally design and execute all craftwork from start to final finishing.

I'm mostly self-taught. Helping my dad with handyman projects, school shop class, and construction jobs during college all contributed to a fun hobby over 40 years ago making small boxes and jewelry which became a livelihood. The novelty of wood-crafting for a living has yet to wear off and creating this special jewelry allows me time and flexibility to devote to my family. I stay grateful I get to do this every day.

-Store away from direct sunlight.

-Not suitable for water activities. Remove wood jewelry before showering, swimming, etc…

-To clean, gently wipe jewelry with a soft, dry cloth.
