Hanna Piepel, an Iowa native, is an interdisciplinary artist exploring the areas of illustration and design with her ceramic practice by image transfer techniques. Her surface designs often reflect an eclectic contrast of vintage florals and mid-century forms. Hanna’s colorful illustration style and hand-drawn patterns are also featured in several published children’s books.
“Most of my ceramic work is thrown on the wheel or slab built. I prefer porcelain, due to its color and responsiveness on the wheel. My colorful illustration style and hand-drawn patterns are applied as surface designs to clay forms using image transfer techniques from photosensitive emulsion screen prints. Each piece is fired two to three times and reflects an obsessive amount of thought spent on design, form and handheld comfort.”
