Whimsy meets graffiti in this painting of Abraham Lincoln.

This is an artwork I completed in a art residency project conducted by UIS from 2021-2022. Lincoln's Legacy was the focus of the study and artworks by 20 chosen artist residing in Illinois. The completed artworks will be exhibited at local sites, including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

The artwork is a colorful mix of words, shapes, and symbols portraying things in Lincoln's life, all surrounding a funky image of the man himself. In the background running horizontally are the words of Lincoln's farewell speech given to the people of Springfield on February 11, 1861.

The piece is set in a large stepped framework, which at the time of this posting is being shown at a local gallery with viewers writing a word or two of their own thoughts of Lincoln. On the stepped "risers" at the base of the frame I have incorporated a quote often attributed to Lincoln, "Whatever you are, be a good one". This quote or at least the exact words were not by Lincoln, but I do believe it embodies his feelings.

Young children are encouraged to write what "good one" they want to be when they grow up, along with their name and age. Once the showing is completed I will photograph the artwork and frame together. The piece was meant to be fun and engaging for all those that view it.

Abraham Lincoln has been a personal hero of mine for the majority of my life so this project was an honor!

Below is link to the video of me describing my thoughts and process in making the artwork.

This 4.25" x 5.5" blank greeting card was created from the image of an original painting by David Hinds of Springfield, Illinois. Comes with a coordinating white envelope.

"Life is a carnival" that is what my friend Jeff has always told me... and I'm starting to believe him!

Though relatively late to the party, I didn't start painting until 2015, though I have been a builder/creator for the bulk of my adult life. Between growing up on a farm and living right smack dab in the middle of ole Abraham Lincoln's stomping grounds, I have never had the shortage of ideas for artwork.

I was very fortunate to have been able to call the late George Colin a friend & neighbor for many years. George was an outsider artist that sold fantastic painted wooden creations from his yard, but it was his vividly colored pastels that were his claim to fame. George's use of bold shapes and colors captured my imagination early on and I have implemented that narrative into my work.

"Whimsical" is often used to describe my work. I honestly don't know where it comes from… all I know for sure is that I do what makes me happy.
