She continued her art education at the University of Akron through an early start program in high school. After earning a BFA in Graphic Design at Kent State University, Leandra interned with the graphic design firm F. Eugene Smith and Associates. Her artwork combines storytelling with a marvelous sense of humor and functionality. The energy of process and shaping of clay into form can create a vessel full of spirit and metaphor. Spirit brings life and soul into the work. It is this quest to find deeper meaning that inspires me to spin the clay into useful shapes that can bring simple pleasure into the world. I practice over and over the dance with the clay becoming vessel. I enjoy the physical nature of wet clay and the transformation into a vitrified object. I try to create glaze effects that have a wide variety of subtle variation and textures to create interest and detail. Handled forms and lidded forms encourage interaction. My original idea was to create a set of alternative postcards-parodies of tourist-friendly artwork-picturing unlikely local scenes. as I began to look at Dubuque and to build up a stock-pile of photographs to draw from, I became less interested in fictional, cartoon subject matter, and was instead drawn to both the visual beauty of Dubuque and to the incongruities created by years of building, erasing, and re-building its parts—one time for reasons of utility, one time for reasons of aesthetics, and other times for reasons impossible to fathom. I started to explore the parking lots, industry, and plots of urban no-man’s-land left by a city expanding outward, leaving its center stretched paper-thin.

For me the best idea is rarely the first idea—it’s much more likely to be the thirteenth idea. The struggle of working out ideas of composition, color and line, one on top of one another, all while trying to retain a high level of clarity, plainly shows in the finished drawings and paintings. In some ways that struggle becomes the drawing style. What is that style? Cartoon-Expressionism? Naïve-Academic? Picturesque-Messiness? All of the above? I’m not sure. But I do think, in the end, these drawings and paintings will make a nice set of postcards.

Find more of Tim's work here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0281/3349/0791/products/image_0e7acaf5-84ac-40c3-932e-40de9f4969e2.jpg?v=1680370092
small-round-vasae-by-david-m-bowman-studio
Extra-Small Round Vase by David M Bowman Studio

For more than thirty years, round vases have been our perennial best-selling item.
