She and her sister spent evenings listening to their mother, a writer, tell epic tales about the anthropomorphized lives of the family’s pet parrots, lizards, cats, goats, and rabbits—with wild coyotes appearing in the stories as special guest stars. Iris’ father, a custom cabinet maker, worked in a shop attached to the house, and Iris absorbed how a woodworker manifests their ideas with their hands. Iris continues the family’s storytelling tradition of magical realism, like her mother, and emulates her father by building the worlds she imagines with her hands.

Scott’s college years were spent in Florence, in the same centuries-old halls where Raphael, Michelangelo, and Da Vinci worked. In her mid twenties, Iris moved to a tiny apartment overlooking a rainforest outside of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. During this time, she stumbled upon finger painting when a serendipitous lack of clean brushes prompted her to finish a painting with her fingertips. In that moment she recognized how fingers could scoop oil paint better than brushes, and overnight she committed to leaving her brushes behind. Scott worked exclusively as an oil finger painter from 2010 to 2020.

Her journey as a painter took her to New York, where she lived and worked in a Brooklyn loft space for six years. Her 2019 solo show, “Ritual in Pairing”, held in Chelsea, was praised by Jerry Saltz and received coverage from outlets including New York Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, and Artnet. On the West coast, Iris is represented by Adelman Contemporary. The bustling energy of New York led Iris, in 2019, to seek isolation and solitude in Northern New Mexico.

In 2020 the artist and her husband, a writer, purchased 500 acres overlooking Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O’Keeffe had once famously painted.

In New York, Iris was represented by Filo Sofi Arts.

Together the creative pair built a house and studio adjacent to national wilderness. Their adobe home sits perched on the edge of a canyon, within walking distance from caves, dinosaur bones, native ruins, and petroglyphs.

Much like the accidental discovery of finger painting over a decade ago, Iris happened upon another brush-free painting technique soon after she moved to New Mexico. While cleaning dust off a wet artwork with her shop air compressor, Iris inadvertently blasted surprising and beautiful circular marks into the surface of the fresh paint. Iris recognized the potential of the air compressor’s marks immediately. Ever since that day Iris has emphatically pursued a new body of work she calls “air paintings”.

Find more work by Iris here.

Artists to Watch is an award-winning company working directly with independent artists to craft high-quality products that meld visually intriguing images with thought-provoking words. From there, she progressed to JASC PaintShop Pro and made graphics, that any early aughts teenager would love, for her self-coded HTML website. This was in the Flash-was-cool days and when you’d make internet friends with domain-owners who let you have a subdomain on their website. In high school, she eventually saved up for Photoshop and became interested in photo manipulation, which was popular on Deviant Art back then.

In 2005, Megan started college and pursued Photography, but after shooting weddings for a few years, she realized she loved the graphics aspect. After that, she went to another fabric company and stayed there for six years as a senior designer and technical specialist; then went freelance for five, becoming skilled in illustration and InDesign. Right after the pandemic hit, she began working as a tech illustrator in aerospace, where she’s taken on a more official leadership role as well as lead trainer and instructional expert.

In 2021, she went back to school for Graphic Design after being in the field for over fifteen years. I've always had a knack and desire to create all kinds of art related things. I started drawing from old photos, but I didn't start painting until 2006. I painted for fun and never thought to make this my career. But as circumstance would have it, I got the opportunity to draw soft pastel portraits and caricatures at Disney World and later in Sea World. It was a great opportunity I couldn't pass up and as I got better, I realized I could do it as a career. In 2011, after selling a few paintings online, I was encouraged by friends and family to do an art show. I haven't stopped since. She carefully carves away all the negative space using knives and gouges, leaving only the raised image. She then makes an impression of the carving, by rolling a thin layer of black ink over the block. She carefully positions a sheet of strong printing paper on top of it, and uses the back of a wooden spoon, rubbing with hard, even pressure to transfer the ink onto the paper. When the ink has dried she brings the image to life by hand painting each impression with high quality watercolor inks.

Sarah's pieces use a combination of printmaking and watercolor painting techniques; created by hand from beginning to end. Each linoleum block print is a part of an edition, telling the viewer or collector that there are only a limited amount of impressions that are made just the same. The bottom number shows the total that will ever be made to look just like it, and the top number shows where that particular impression falls into the edition. Each linoleum block print is an original work of art. For an edition of 75, the block must be rolled with ink 75 times, with each piece of paper placed on it by hand. The ink is then transferred to the paper using the back of a wooden spoon, and then each impression is carefully hand painted 75 different times with brilliant colors. Finally, each impression is signed, numbered and stamped by the artist in the order it was created.

Find more of Sarah's work here.

This 5" x 7" blank card features an image from an original linocut by Sarah Angst of Bozeman, Montana. The card includes a coordinating white envelope.

Sarah Angst grew up in Winnipeg, Canada and attended the University of Minnesota – Duluth. In 2007 she moved with her husband to Bozeman, Montana, where she took the plunge to become a full time artist. After years of traveling to art fairs across the country, Sarah knew that nomadic lifestyle would not be sustainable, especially if she wanted to start a family.

Sarah Angst Cards began in 2011 with a decision to create affordable reproductions of her bright & bold, hand painted linocuts. Customers were so drawn to her beautiful imagery that greeting cards seemed like the perfect medium to share her art with a vast audience - without being on the road. With compliments from customers like “We buy cards by the handful!” she knew her choice to create greeting cards was the right one. People from all walks of life find special designs they want to give, keep, or frame.

Most of Sarah’s original pieces are small and quaint, displaying the effortless beauty in everyday subject matter. They reflect her love of nature, her passion for color, and her sense of humor.

My approach to art forces me to simplify things; to find the essence of my subject and display it with line and color. With so many distractions in life, it is soothing to enjoy something simple and serene, that grabs your attention, but also reminds you to slow down and enjoy the beauty in life.

I like creating pieces that seem familiar to people; that help remind them of fond memories from their own lives. When I finish a piece and it has a timeless nostalgic quality, my hope is that feeling will resonate with others as well.

I have always loved creating art - ever since I was a little girl. Putting elements together until they look and feel just right is very rewarding. Having others respond so positively to what I’ve created is even better.

The printmaking process:

Sarah's original prints begin with a drawing, which she transfers onto a linoleum block in reverse.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0281/3349/0791/collections/image_2c587325-812e-4688-b423-76ec47eb91db.jpg?v=1640734761
